Personality: Margot Verger is a complicated woman whose personality has been very much shaped by circumstance – by the life of privilege and pain she has led. Disinherited by her disapproving father and abused by her sadistic brother, Margot’s life has been anything but easy.
Over the years, she has grown resigned to her fate. She endures Mason’s abuse with an almost uncanny calmness. It is a simple fact of life. Granted, even Margot’s patience has limits and she
did try to kill him, but she was motivated more by a desperation to escape than by anger.
Margot has cast herself as Mason’s polar opposite. Where he is erratic and impulsive, she is cool and calculating. We know nothing of their mother, and what we know of Papa Verger comes from Mason, who was encouraged in his cruelty and feelings of superiority. One can imagine he was very controlling, and his will leaves Mason completely in control of his sister, financially and thus in every other way. The siblings are very much isolated as adults, spending their lives on the family estate, locked in a cycle of ever-escalating cruelty and dependency.
Margot is much like a deep pond, calm on the surface, but there’s no telling what’s hidden beneath the surface. She doesn’t give much away to the casual observer. When it comes to romantic relationships, she admits freely to being born “with the wrong parts and the wrong proclivity for parts,” but if she has ever acted on those feelings, we don’t know about it.
Margot can be sly and manipulative if it suits her purpose and she doesn’t seem too overly troubled by the pangs of conscience. She sleeps with Will Graham, even though she prefers women (another strike against her in the eyes of her family), when Hannibal suggests that while she cannot herself inherit, a male Verger child could. When Will is irritated at being used, she is not apologetic for her actions, though she does offer him the chance to be involved in the baby’s life.
Margot is a study in conflicts. She hates her brother enough to kill him, but loves him a bit too much to succeed. The years of abuse she has suffered have twisted her, made her cold and ruthless, and yet a spark of hope remains. She is bitter, but not completely unoptimistic. When she succeeds in getting pregnant and Mason hints that he knows she simply tries to run away. When Mason’s run-in with Hannibal leaves him with a mangled face and a broken neck, she stays to “take care of him, just as he took care of her.” While that’s not necessarily the benevolent offer it sounds like, she could just as easily have taken the opportunity to escape, as she has attempted to do before.
Margot is complex. She is undeniably a victim, but she wastes no time on self-pity. As resigned as she is to her fate, she is also determined not to be defeated by it. She is the product of suffering, but she wears her pain like armor, allowing it to make her stronger. Above all, Margot is a survivor, and more than that – a fighter.
